During this time, what is now known as New York was an area occupied by Native American Indians. It can therefore be argued that contact with Europeans is what accelerated this areas development into Empire State, as the state of New York is nicknamed today. Giovanni da Verrazano, an Italian explorer, is recorded to have discovered the New York Harbor in 1524 (Lambert). It is also asserted by Lambert (n.d) that Englishman Henry Hudson sailed along the Hudson River, which was named after him (Lambert). The proper history of New York in terms of development of settlement and improved economic activity can be traced to the Dutch, who occupied the area along the Hudson River in 1624 (History.com Staff, 2009). After settling in this area for about two years, the Dutch established a colony which was referred to as New Amsterdam on what is currently known as Manhattan Island. This colony flourished owing to the vibrancy of its economy, as underscored by rapid development and improved standards of living. However, it later on fell to the English in 1664 in the wake of the latters colonial advancement (Infoplease). Due to this take over, the colony was renamed as New York in honor of the Duke of York (History.com Staff, 2009).It should be noted that New York became part of the original 13 colonies with the advancement of the British. Further, it has been asserted that New York played a critical strategic role during the American Revolution (History.com Staff, 2009). Given its liberty credentials, it is little wonder that New York saw one of the most seminal moments in Americans history, the immigration of vast numbers of individuals from across Europe who crossed over into the United States through Ellis Island between 1892 and 1954 (History.com Staff, 2009).State IdentityAcross the United States, different jurisdictions use specific symbols to serve as unique identifiers.
